Decyzje jakie podejmuje człowiek, dotyczą jedynie jego postępowania, nie może natomiast zdecydować, kiedy nadejdą kolejne etapy życia. Dotyczy to szczególnie starości, ponieważ jest ona jednoznaczna z kresem życia, a przecież nikt nie chce myśleć o śmierci. Temat starości i starzenia się stał się inspiracją dla poetów i pisarzy różnych epok do stworzenia dzieł. Każdy z autorów zwraca uwagę na inne aspekty starości, prezentuje tak, jak ją widzi. Kreacja bohaterów, będących reprezentantami tego okresu jest więc stworzona na podstawie indywidualnej wizji twórcy. Starość postrzegana jest jako czas radosny i beztroski, a jednocześnie stanowi pewien powtarzający się schemat. Niekiedy jest źródłem bólu, cierpienia i osamotnienia. Może być również pretekstem do gorszego, poniżającego traktowania osób starych, które traktowane są jak przedmioty.
