Ja bym napisal tak :

The beginning of the last summer holidays didn't seem any diffrent from any other. Me and my three friends decided to go for a trip to the mountains in the south of Poland. I had known that place like the back of my hand because I had been there before :)

tyle że do całej kompozycji nie bedzie mi pasować że byłam tam wcześniej muszę wpleść wątek ze opowieśniami znajomego

"we knew this place by tale of pal much earlier" , może tak

We had heard about this place before from (?) tales of our next- door neighbour. (żeby tego friends nie powtarzaćź)

co o tym myślisz?

generalnie sie mowi : 'My three friends and I' -
a moze cos takiego:
We had heard about this place from stories told to us by our neighbour.
