longing for...

Witam,
Mam jedno zdanie do przetłumaczenia:
I hadn't found anyone in a decade who could squelch the more than occasional longing for what we had shered
I co dokładnie oznacza longing for...

'long for' znaczy 'tęsknić za'. Ale tam są błędy: na końcu pewnie 'shared', nie wiem też, co tu może znaczyć 'squelch' i po co potem jest 'the'.

squelch can mean 'wyciszyć". it's used figuratively here.

edit : "to stop sth from growing, increasing or developing"

I have no grammar rule to back this up, but you can often hear "barring the occasional this and that", "except for the occasional bla bla"

Now that you put it that way ("the occasional something") it makes a whole lot of sense. But, still, it should be hyphenated, shouldn't it?

Czemu czytasz tę książkę? Może jest za trudna?

W wolnym tłumaczeniu : Przez dekadę nie znalazłam/em nikogo kto mógłby zdławić tą występującą nierzadko tęsknotę za tym co między nami było.

It could be but it doesn't have to, I guess. The adjective compound realized by a fronted correlative 'the more ...than " , the second base is not a participle.

squelch - right , fig; 'put down or suppress thoroughly or completely' ( chiefly US )

Sav, there's no ... between 'more' and 'than' in this compound adjective
However, it seems that hyphenation is no longer in: 'quality of life studies' is actually 'quality-of-life studies', etc.

Yes, you’re absolutely right, I noticed it either but didn’t fix the dots.:)
The item is still correlative in nature though and derived directly from its non-discontinuous counterpart. ( discontinuity in correlative structures in comprarative sentences, ‘than’ climbs two rungs up the tree , hence discontinuity)

..could squelch the more occasional longing than whatever...

He is earning higher-than-average wages.
He is earning higher wages than (are) average.

If seen as an ad hoc compound premodifying ‘longing’, then hyphenation is indeed usual in careful writing. Or maybe was ?
