The Russian Federation has never been credited with too much trust and cordiality among European countries. Nevertheless, she is a country of great power and influence, which derives from her being abundant in most natural resources people use in various fields of life. In addition, a country possessing more than a third of the total world’s territory has to be treated seriously and with respect. The last factor contributing to the willingness of Europe to keep good ties with Russia is its military power which occasionally poses a real threat to specific countries located in Europe. Despite Russia’s dwindling prestige and real powerfulness on the world political stage, she does matter, the best example of which is President Putin’s place in a ranking of the world’s most powerful people prepared by Forbes.
It hast to be stated that Europe, and especially its most complex, institutionalized cluster of states (The European Union) is also an attractive partner to Russia. The UE offers a big market and is one of the biggest Russia’s clients in terms of oil and gas consumption. Some EU member states (Germany) have already come to the conclusion that it is better to cooperate with Russia instead of preventing the wound of the past from healing (Poland). Anyway, it is nothing new to say Europe and Russia have to cooperate in the wake of the emerging power of such countries as China or India.
The main objective of this paper is to analyze the relations between the EU and Russia as well as answer the question of whether this partnership is characterized by hostility or friendliness. Determining the extent of the mutual cooperation and outlining prospects is another goal of this dissertation.
