I'm writing to you because I have something important to let you know about. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to join in the chat about the healthy nutrition. It took place in the assembly hall on the first floor in our school. It was led by Mrs. Tracy Collin from the Department of Health and she brought up a lot of interesting points I'd like to share with you.
Mrs. Collin focused especially on the ways we can improve our daily eating habits. She said it was crucial to our health to emphasize fruit, vegetables and whole grains in our diet as they are a good source of fiber and can help keep the level of bad HDL cholesterol low as well as help in an overall metabolism.
It was also said that, in terms of dairy, we should try to stick to fat-free or low-fat products since too much animal fat is not good for our arteries and heart and carries a risk of a heart attack. We could also find out that a healthy diet should include lean meat, fish, beans and nuts but must be low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars. As far as the candy goes, Mrs. Collins said that an occasional piece of chocolate is not a sin but if we crave for something sweet, we should first try to satisfy our need with a piece of fresh fruit instead. Dried fruit is also a good option and it provides us with iron which is an essential mineral for our health.
I consider the meeting and the given tips very useful. It was especially very interesting to have found out that one can lower the level of bad cholesterol by including more fiber in a diet. This is certainly not enough, but along with other good habits, it might help in prevention of the very common problem nowadays-a heart attack.So it is definitely worth trying.
As for my way of eating (you know how I love chocolate) I'm ready to try the healthier version of a sweet tooth quencher- maybe the piece of fruit will help. I don't think I'll be able to eliminate chocolate totally but at least I could give it a try and lower the consumption of the added sugar.
As you can reason from my letter - this was a very helpful meeting and I'm glad I took part in it. I hope there will be more affairs of this kind in the future.
