Jest takie zdanie:
I think he's pretty tall. Like father like son.

I skąd wiemy czy to znaczy:

He's rather tall

czy

He's very tall?

Własnie problem w tym że pretty = rather lub pretty = very.

pretty= calkiem, calkiem, ale tak nie do końca.

Jak by byl bardzo wysoki, to by byl very tall. A tak to jest tylko pretty tall :(

I think that "pretty, rather (and fairly)" are pretty much the same. "Pretty" is used mainly in speech while "rather" is rather formal. All three mean fairly the same thing, that is that something is true to some degree, but not completely.

I see but what about "pretty" as "very"?

Now, it makes a huge difference. Is it "very" or "rather"?

She's pretty nice. (Do I mean "very" or it is more like "rather"?)

jezeli ktos ci proponuje obiad, to odpowiedz, bez wzgledu na uzyte slowa,zazwyczaj bedzie znaczyc "tak" lub "nie". A skoro tak jest, to "pretty good" nie bedzie znaczyc "rather good but not really good", bo ludzie nie maja w zwyczaju uzuwania "pretty good" w znaczeniu "nie".
Co innego "pretty tall". Tutaj nie masz powiedziec tak/nie i pretty znaczy "quite bout not very", bo takie stopniowanie jest dopuszczalne przez kontekst.

Czyli najlepsze tłumaczenie na pretty to "całkiem" i jak to zwykle bywa czytać znaczenie z kontekstu.
