Once upon a time, an old man was lost in the desert.
After several days, he got so bored he was RIPPING HIS BALLS OFF.

balls is testicles and to rip one\'s balls off ( ouch!) would be the same as saying bored out of his tree or bored out of his scull = TERRIBLY bored.

also, it drove him nuts, drove him up the wall, drove him bonkers.
