Story started with an unexpected treat an old man Stamatis of deafness by Dr. Iannis. In an unconventional way, using a hook and a hammer, he pulled peas with hairy old man's ear, and thus Stamatis heard for the first time since childhood.
In the next chapter Megalo Velisarios, a man with a reputation for being extremely strong, visited the island of Cephallonia in Greece and gave a performance. he accidentally hurts Mandras, a local fisherman. Later Mandras thanked him because his wounds led him to the house of the local doctor, Iannis, and to the doctor’s daughter, Pelagia. Mandras and Pelagia fell in love although initially their love was not accepted by the father of Pelagia.
A few days later, the celebrations were held in honor of the saint of the island of St. Geronimos, where Pelagia and Mandras become engaged.
But soon the war reached to the Greece, Mandras left to the front and Pelagia received no answer from him to her letters and thought that he didn't love her anymore. When Mandras returned, so dirty and hurt that she didn't recognize him, Pelagia learned that he hadn't answered her letters because he couldn't read or write. Meanwhile, Italian troops were sent to Albania as part of a plan to attack Greece. Carlo Guercio was a homosexual who didn't dare admit his sexual condition for fear of rejection. He joined the army and fell in love with Francesco, a soldier from Genoa, who never knew about Carlo’s love. Together, they marched from Albania to Athens, suffered extreme cold and hunger and were defeated by the Greeks. Francesco died, and some of the soldiers were saved when a German invasion forced the Greeks to fight on two fronts.
