Henryk Sienkiewicz was born on May 5, 1846 in Wola Okrzejska in the Podlasie, he died on November 5, 1916 in Vevey in Switzerland. He came from a patriotic noble family.
He learned in a High School in Warsaw, and since 1886, he studied law and medicine.
He has not completed studies and he took a job in the Warsaw press as a columnist and reporter. Most of his articles in the „Tygodnik Ilustrowany”, „Przegląd Tygodniowy”, „Niwia” i „Gazeta Polskiea” signed Alias Litwos. In the years 1876-1878 he stayed in North America. Later he visited many European countries and Africa. The most famous
novels and short stories Henryka Sienkiewicza are : „Stary sługa”, „Latarnik”, „Janko Muzykant”, „Orso”, „Z pamiętnika poznańskiego nauczyciela”, „Bartek Zwycięzca”, „Szkice węglem”, „Za chlebem”, „Wspomnienie z Maripozy”, „Sachem”, „Legenda żeglarska”. Great fame brought to the writer's novels. Most popular of them are „Trylogia” („Ogniem i mieczem”, „Potop”, „Pan Wołodyjowski”), „Krzyżacy”, „Rodzina Połanieckich”, „W pustyni i w puszczy”, „Quo vadis”. For the last one Sienkiewicz received in 1905, Nobel Prize in Literature. A lot of novels have been filmed . To celebrate 25 years literary work a gift from society writer received the manor house in Oblęgork near Kielce. Here among other things collected memorabilia of the writer and opened the museum. Other know museum dedicated Sienkiewiczowi is located in Poznan in the Old Market, in one
of the historic tenement. Many works Henryk Sienkiewicz have been translated into more
than 40 languages. Among them you can see so exotic such as Hindi, Korean, Japanese, Armenian, Kazakh, Mari or Tatarsk. In 1924, the writer's ashes were brought to Polish and
placed in the cathedral of St. John in Warsaw.
