‘You can jive having the time of your life’
Rumba, cha-cha, tango, salsa…. – that’s only a few types of dance they can perform. They’re quick, graceful and precise. You can see a smile on their faces. The old African proverb goes: “If you can walk, you can dance”. But what if you can’t walk?
The meeting with a famous choreographer took place on last Friday in our school. What’s unusual thing about this work? Mike Cornwell a slim, muscular man in his thirties is an organizer of dance workshops for wheelchair users. He took part in the meeting to tell the students about his work with disabled people. “It’s a really tough nut to crack” – he says. “Hours of trainings… But I know it’s worth it. When you see their smile, you have a great feeling of satisfaction”. After the series of questions setting by students Mike presented several dance routines. Everybody were delighted.
There is no doubt that Mike can be a role model for young people. He combined his passion with elating other people. This young man has transformed the lives of many disabled people – they have become a much more visible part of community.
