Many people think that rats are awful and disgusting animals. I know it isn’t truth because since 2 months I have been owner two fantastic rats. Firstly, I wanted only one rat but when I rid that rats should never live alone because animals kept in pairs or groups are happier, more confident and no more difficult to tame, I decided to buy two rats.
Everyone knows how do rats look like. They have short fur, small ears, sparkling eyes, funny teeth and long tail which serves as a heat-loss organ and it is also used for balance. Of course they have four short paws tipped with claws.
My pets are named Tom and Cruz. Like other rats are clean, intelligent and affectionate animals. In short time they became very attached to me, made playful, sensitive pets. I rid that they can be taught to come by name and learn a variety of tricks, so I spend my free-time teaching them.
My rats spend most time in the cage which is very big and look like a playground with ropes, ladders, tree branches, shelves and flowerpots attached to the sides. Their cage is sited in the living room so the rats enjoy watching my family. Obviously, they need at least an hour’s playtime outside their cage every day.
I must take care of my pets by feeding, playing and cleaning their cage. Rats are extremely clean creatures so bathing them is rarely necessary.
Rats are omnivores and like fresh foods, for example, fruit: apples, cheeries, grapes and vegetables: broccoli, potatoes, peas, carrot. Moreover, rats should be fed some low-fat meat, cooked soya and sunflower seeds. Very important is fresh water which should be available at all time.
Like other rats, my pets make a variety sounds including peeps, chirps and squeaks. These can be signs of protest or stress. Sometimes they hiss but I don’t know why. Furthermore, rats grind their front teeth together producing a sound called bruxing or chattering. They probably grind their teeth together to wear them down.
I have two males so I don’t expect kittens but maybe someday one of my rats will become a father…
