Scotland is one of four constituent nations which form the United Kingdom (the other three are England, Wales and Northern Ireland).
Scotland is a mountainous country in the north of the island of Great Britain and shares a land border to the south with England and is bounded by the North Sea on the east and the Atlantic Ocean on the west.

The flag of Scotland was first hoisted in 1512. It is one of the oldest flags of the world which is used till date.
The Scottish flag is the cross of St. Andrew, also known as the Saltire.

Christianity is the largest religion in Scotland . At the 2001 census 65% of the Scottish were Christians. The Church of Scotland, often known as The Kirk, is recognised in law as the national church of Scotland. It is not an established church and is independent of state control. However, it is the largest religious grouping in Scotland, with 42% of the population.

The official language is English, although Gaelic is spoken, primarily in the North and West of Scotland. For your information, the local date and time are available in Gaelic. The Scots language (which has many similarities to English, but also draws on French and Gaelic) is also spoken.

Scotland's head of state is the monarch of the United Kingdom, currently Queen Elizabeth II (since 1952). The title Elizabeth II caused controversy around the time of the queen's coronation, as there had never been an Elizabeth I in Scotland.
Scotland has limited self-government within the United Kingdom as well as representation in the UK Parliament. Executive and legislative powers have been devolved to, respectively, the Scottish Government and the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood in Edinburgh.
Scottish parliament responsibilities include social work services, health, local government and education.

Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland, a position it has held since 1437. It is the seventh largest city in the United Kingdom and the second largest Scottish city, after Glasgow which is situated 45 miles (72 km) to the west.

There are four universities in Edinburgh with over 100,000 students studying in the city.

The atmosphere in the city is something special.

These include the Museum of Scotland, the Royal Museum, the National Library of Scotland, National War Museum of Scotland, the Museum of Edinburgh, Museum of Childhood and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
This city is home to Scotland's five National Galleries too.

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and third most populous in the United Kingdom. The city is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands. A person from Glasgow is known as a Glaswegian, which is also the name of the local dialect.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Glasgow grew to a population of over one million,[9] and was the fourth-largest city in Europe, after London, Paris and Berlin.


It was European City of Culture in 1990 and welcomes over 3 million tourists from all over the world each year.

Scotland is well known for its mountainous and beautiful scenery
This country can be divided into three distinct areas: the Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands and the northern Highlands and Islands.

The Southern Uplands are the fertile plains and hills bordering England. The highest peak in the area is only 2763 feet high.

The Central Lowlands stretch from the Firth of Forth in the east to the Firth of Clyde in the west. This area contains the nation's main industrial belt and the country's two largest cities, Glasgow in the west and Edinburgh, the capital, in the east. Most of the Scotland's population lives in this area.

The Highlands comprise dramatic mountain ranges of sandstone and granite, which rise to their greatest height at Ben Nevis, which at 4406 feet is Britain's highest mountain.

Scotland has some 790 islands .

Scotland is also noted for its lochs (this name is generally used for lakes in Scotland) because has over 100 rivers and over 500 fresh and saltwater lochs.

The most popular is Loch Ness, it is a big, deep,lake in the Scottish Highlands .
It is the largest freshwater lake in the Britain. It is twenty four miles long and it is the second largest Scottish loch after Loch Lomond and is best known for legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessie".
so... Loch Ness and its monster are both found in northern Scotland. The monster was first photographed by a Hugh Gray in 1933. This photo was the most famous of them all.

A scottish climate is moderately warm, markedly sea.

From castles to zoos, museums to art galleries, Scotland boasts a large number of quality visitor attractions..

If you love history, you can visit Scotlands numerous castles, particularly Stirling castle, which is the biggest one.
Edinburgh Castel is a most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century.

You can also visit historical towns, as Aberdeen, with old streets and churches.


Bagpipes, kilt, and whisky are the most famous products of Scottish culture. Formerly THE kilt was only THE men's dress, but now all 'of' ScotS can wear THE kilt.
Scotland,is the home of golf too.

Scotland has given rise to many more famous people, notable in the arts, literature, inventors, philosophers, architects and so on, than would be expected for a country of such modest size and population. You have a list of some of these individuals.

Unquestionable Scotland is a beautiful country. Visiting Scotland is one of the most exciting experiences for any traveler. A visit to Scotland is always a great pleasure.
