as you probably know, only one MP seat is 'awarded' to each constituency, which simply means that the candidate who receives the highest number of votes becomes the MP for this constituency. The others may have 'scored' higher than the winner in another constituency, but they are out. This is called"election by simple majority" and the opposite, which we can see in Poland, is 'proportional representation'. The allusion is to horse-racing: "the horse that reaches the winning post first is the one that wins"
