"repute" as a noun is not that commonly used.
examples: house of ill repute, a writer of little repute, a person of repute

At this level, "reputation" is the appropriate choice

I think that the difference might best be 'graspable' if we put the following into Polish
(though not that clear-cut in other examples we may find, I guess ) :
" He couldn't care less about protecting his reputation as he was a talk-show host of international repute."
