Well, you could think of it as a three-dimensional space, fui.

the horses were eating something that was par tof the field - I guess that might serve as an explanation

so, if the horses are NOT eating but are just there, they won't be IN the field anymore? :)

The same goes for streets.
He left his car in the street for two hours.
They were reparing the holes on the street.

I’m sitting on the grass – surface, the grass is short
I’m sitting in the grass – volume ,‘more enclosed area’ - the grass is long

The contrast is still about ‘on’- surface and ‘in’- area but usage may vary from speaker to speaker and context to context.

OK, but seriously. Farmers are working, racing their combines or just playing with their cucumbers IN the field/s/. They're hardly ever enclosed or threeeeeeeeeee dimensional.

"Enclosed area' shouldn't be taken that literally, I guess. For farmers, their field can be an 'enclosed
area'. As I said , usage can be different and the contrast may have various implications.
I didn't say anything about three dimensional.

Three-dimensional was my idea. I don't think it has to be structural; just use your imagination :)
