Melvin Burgess in his novel brings up a subject of child abuse. He describes not only children’s humiliation and suffering but also how they affect their psyche and changes their future life. One of those victims is Ben Jones. For most of the characters in the novel he is just a nervous scoundrel. However no one suspects that his problems are caused by harms which he experienced as a child.
