(Nad)używanie przyimków UP i DOWN?

Zapewnie nie jest to nadużywanie, ale tak się wydaje to komuś żyjącemu w niewiedzy, ale do rzeczy. Dlaczego mówi się:

to go up north; to go down south - skoro wiadomo gdzie jest 'north' i 'south'?
to go up/down the street - skoro nachylenie ulicy jest prawie niezauważalne, lub ulica ma kilka wzniesień?
to fall down - skoro nie można upaść do góry.
to wake up i inne.

Czy możecie proszę wytłumaczyć?

Up and down here don't have 'any vertical implications'. They mean something like 'along' or from one end to the other.

Maybe because north is up and south is down when you look at the map?
Maybe someone started using them this way and it has stuck since then.

It's so obvious that the use of the prepositions seems to be unnecessary :)

I don't really know what your question is

with motion verbs up and down express movement either in relation to a horizontal or vertical axis
and with these verbs it's clearly vertical
I can't explain it any better

Is there any difference between:
He fall on the floor.
and
He fall down on the floor.
I can't see any. What do we add 'down' for? Only to illustrate movement which is expressed by the verb anyway?

And another example:
He always wakes late.
He always wakes up late.

rowniez, osoba majaca pojecie o numerach domow w danej okolicy (wie, w jakim kierunku liczby rosna/maleja) tez uzyje swojej logiki dla numerow rosnacych jako up the street, a malejacych jako down the street

jezeli fizycznie sa wzniesienia, to logiczne bedzie uzycie up the street pod gore, a down the street w dol, niezaleznie od powyzszych wskazowek

fell on the floor = fell down on the floor
wake = wake up
partykuly podkreslaja w takim przypadku kompletnosc danej czynnosci
