2nd conditional (myślał, że jesteś...)

Która z form będzie poprawna, dla wyrażenia przypuszczenia o stanie obecnym:

If your father thought you were a virgin...
czy też może:
If your father thought you are a virgin...

Wydaje się, że obie formy mogłyby być zastosowane, ale dla wyrażenia: "Gdyby twój ojciec myślał, że jesteś dziewicą.." prawidłowym przekładem jest nr 2. Czy tak?

If your father thought you were (still?) a virgin, would you tell him about us? (tu bardziej pasowałoby mi, bo gdyby myślał, że jesteś)

W takim razie rozumiem, że muszę powiedzieć:
I your father thought you had been a virgin (at the time we got married), would you explain him...

dla wyrażenia, że gdyby myślał (teraz), że byłaś... ?

I your father thought you had been a virgin (at the time we got married), would you 'explain' (co to jest? tak nie mowimy) him...

..explain the truth to him? nevertheless

I thought you were - teraz (but you are not)
czas przeszly oznacza tu, ze sie dystansujemy od takiego stwierdzenia, bo nie jest prawdziwe

Rozumiem.

Jednak pozostaje pytanie o obecne przypuszczenie dotyczące przeszłego stanu. Chcąc powiedzieć: "gdyby twój ojciec sądził, że byłaś dziewicą (np. zanim się pobraliśmy), czy powiedziałabyś.." należałoby ująć jako:

If my father thought you had been a virgin at that time, would you...

czy tak?

Nie chodzi o obecne przypuszczenie dot. stanu przeszłego, ale raczej o przypuszczenie dot. czyjegoś wyobrażenia na temat przeszłości. Spróbujmy z innym zdaniem:

Someone has stolen a diamond.
If Marry were the thief, she wouldn't tell anybody about it.
If I had stolen the diamond, I would have left the country.

ale wątpliwości mam z poniższymi:
If you father thought that (you had stolen?) the diamond, would you tell him about it?
If your father thought that (you were) the thief, would you deny it?

nadal nie rozumiem: had stolen odnosi sie do przeszlosci, ale were do terazniejszosci
