More natural ways of expressing a corresponding negation would be:
> I can’t help obeying her.
> I can't help but obey her.
> You can't help admiring him.
> You can't
(help) but admire him.
Dlaczego '
help' jest tutaj opcjonalne (jeśli o tym właśnie świadczy nawias) a w zdaniu '
I can't help but obey her.' nie jest? Czy wpływa na to podmiot czy czasownik?
No. More natural in the Quirk way only.
There are three natural and grammatical ways of saying the same thing:
1. You can't help admiring him.
2. You can't but admire him.
3. You can but admire him.
(2) and (3) may seem contradictory, but they are not. Go figure.
"You can't help but admire him" is a permissivist's way of enriching the riches of English.
Quirk et al. still belong in the bunch.
