Po pierwsze, police' tutaj jest jako l. mnoga. The police ARE looking...The police are searching...

Police is actually singular , not plural . It would be plural if we used word policemen ( more than one person) and singular again for Policeman ( one person).

it's singular in form, but plural in meaning; hence, the plural form of a verb that you use with it
