Dlaczego past perfect?

Mamy zdanie :
"- I had had my computer for six years befor I decided to give it away. "
Dlaczego mamy tu czas past perfect a nie past perfect continous? Przecież jest "for six years"?
Bo nie możesz mieć progressive form od „to have” w znaczeniu „to own”.
"have" oznacza tutaj possession (to own) i w takim znaczeniu nie uzywa sie go w formie continuous. Jesli oznacza action or experience to wtedy moze przybierac forme continuous np. We had been having this argument for hours before the police finally came.
@Aaric; graveyard shift ? :)

Not at all. I don’t have shifts. You?

No, I am a free spirit. I did my time. It just occurred to me yesterday that while Everyone was sound asleep we both sat at the computer at the same time like Night Elves. :-)
