If you refer to your experiences, you use PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE:
'I have never done it (before).' - it means you neither did it in the past nor in the present
If you refer to your experiences from a point of the past time, you use PAST PERFECT SIMPLE:
'I had never done it (before).' - which means you didn't do it in the past up to another specified time in the past
Just remember - talking about one's experiences introduces Perfect Simple tenses.
