Przeglądając słownik (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English) natknąłem się na obrazek, na którym wypisane były różne części samochodu. Były również opisane siedzenia w samochodzie. Jedno z nich nazwane zostało:

driver's seat

a drugie:

passenger seat

I tu pytanie - dlaczego "passenger" nie ma 's? Nie powinno to tak wyglądać:

passenger's seat

?

Pomyśl: Ilu kierowcow, ilu pasażerów w jednym samochodzie?

but here's a really tough one - driver license! can't really think of a reason why it' s not driver's - driver's is acceptable in spoken AmE though.

E - chyba nie zrozumiałem ;). Ja myślałem o dopełniaczu fleksyjnym (tak to się chyba nazywa). Otóż driver's seat - siedzenie kierowcy. Passenger's seat - siedzenie pasażera. Wytłumacz dokładniej o co chodzi ;););).

Use of '' 's"

1) If we have classical name ending with "s" (e.g. James), we form genitive by adding apostrophe. When it's used in modern context, we add 's'
James' vs James's

2)'s is used to describe being at sb's place (at Jane's, at my grandmother's, house of Mary's)

3) When name is long , e.g. The elderly lady's house, John's and Mike's book.

4) Idiomatic expressions. NO RULES.
money's worth
hair's breadth
wine glass
committee meeting
church mouse
tea break
party politics
doll's house
TV licence etc.

(as far as period of time is concerned, we use apostrophe : 'day's journey', 'hour's work' etc)

Chodzi o to, że jeżeli napiszesz "passenger's seat" to nie będzie wiadomo, o którego pasażera i które siedzenie chodzi - chyba, że o tego przy kierowcy. "the front passenger's seat" jest często spotykane. natomiast jeżeli napiszesz "the driver's seat", to wszystko jasne. Stąd pewnie różnica, która cię zaciekawiła.
