Musisz zmienic "fly a plane" na samo "fly" albo na "travel by plane". W Polsce mowimy "latac samolotem", w jzyku angielskim mowimy samo "latac" albo "podrozowac samolotem".

Zdanie z uzyciem Past Simple jest duzo bardziej naturalne.

Autor moze rowniez wyrazic: It was the first time I have ever flown.
Pozostawiajac jego zdanie poczatkowe - present perfect jest tu na miejscu.

There is no necessity for "It was the first time" to be followed by past perfect, though no doubt it is a common occurrence.

It was my first travel by plane/airplane/aeroplane. - jak dla mnie brzmi dość dobrze, choć mogę być w błędzie.

Poza tym wg słownika Collins powinno się używać przedimka on zamiast in w tym przypadku:

"on the train/plane (go) pociągiem/samolotem

(be) w pociągu/samolocie"

travel by plane - idealnie; najbardziej naturalnie.
