I, for one don’t have much experience in the matter of emigration. However, I’d like to tell you about my friend who left our beautiful country a month ago. Her destination was UK. She had decided to go there to work as an au-pair just after passing the examination for the secondary-school certificate (she postponed taking up studies). The departure had been considered thoroughly (she shouldn’t have counted on sheer luck after all). All bureaucracy was settled down by employment agency.
What inclined my her to leave home? Basically, she wanted to try something challenging in her life. Moreover she was anxious much more to become independent, to polish the language, to find out how it is to live in the foreign country than to earn a lot of money. As far as I know the weekly payment is about L50.
To tell you the truth, my friend had had to wait approx. 2 months before a suitable family was found (they had to secure accommodation, food and some English course for her) . Though being offered to work & live in London she choose the seaside because of the peacefulness and quietness of such place.
In my opinion as for practicing language, I’m sure that after a year she will have learnt colloquial speech and lots of expressions being used in everyday life. Therefore I told her to take some grammar reference books with her. I hope that she won’t have any problems to begin for instance philological studies at the university here in Poland as soon as she returns (but it’s not that simple considering both the level of entry examinations and the number of candidates). I will keep my fingers crossed for her. I believe she remembered those words I told her before getting on the train.
